I Still Know What I Didn’t Do This Summer for Day 7

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is a trip back into the 90s horror landscape. I feel like I’m visiting old friends in this movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Brandy, Mekhi Phifer, Jennifer Esposito, and Jack Black are among the people fighting for their lives in this Scary Movie classic. We have the Final Girl, the suspicious boyfriend/love interest, the Black best friend, and the overly macho Black boyfriend. All tropes and actors I know so well. I’m actually not feeling like running away from my life today, but I’m sure that feeling will only last about 101 minutes.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is the sequel to the classic teen scream queen movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. We are following Julie James and Ray who are survivors from the first movie. Julie is in college and wants to run away from her traumatic memories of last summer. Her roommate Karla, played by Brandy, wins a trip to the Bahamas and thus we have our travel horror movie from 1998.

I was supposed to be in Barbados this summer. Not the Bahamas, but still the Caribbean. If someone were to give me tickets to anywhere right now, I’d be the biggest sucker and take them in an instant. I’d probably ask fewer questions than Julie and Karla did. (They asked none.)

This movie is nowhere near as good as the original, but one could say that I have tastes that lend toward movies with “cult followings” anyway. So it’s right up my alley.

Things I learned tonight:

  1. The capitol of Brazil is Brasilia.
  2. Know when it’s off-season and know what to expect because of it.
  3. Voodoo is not inherently bad. Don’t let your prejudices get you killed.
  4. Don’t let anyone go off on their own willingly. They are probably the killer.

*Also, I think Brandy actually did kill someone with her car. So if this franchise were real, she would most likely be Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character.
