All Truth for day #4

Tonight I’m watching Truth or Dare, released in 2018, and I’m hoping this will help me resist clicking confirm on the many Mexico vacation deals that are at VERY affordable prices. Truth or Dare follows a group of college seniors who are going to Mexico for spring break. I could never afford to do one of those spring break type of vacations, so I’m already down to cheer on whatever curse they are about to bring on themselves.

A very common horror movie device is to make the main characters generally unlikeable. All of their vices, bad habits, and all-around asshole behavior are on full display right from the beginning. Most people don’t view themselves as being worthy of the violence they’re watching on screen, so this helps the viewer remove themselves from the situation and take on the role of objective observer – one ready to judge along with whatever greater force is punishing the characters on screen.

I connected with no one in this movie, and I don’t think I was supposed to. In fact, I’m not exactly sure what the point of this movie actually is. It wasn’t particularly entertaining, clever, scary, or suspenseful. There was nothing outstanding about this movie, except that you can’t trust someone who seems to only care about other people more than themselves. But I already knew that one.

Things I learned from this movie:

  1. I’m old enough to remember The Ring. So don’t watch everybody’s YouTube video.
  2. Start a YouTube channel.
  3. Don’t be friends with people you don’t actually like.
  4. Don’t “party” in a former or present sacred place.
  5. Sometimes you should just play the game.
